As of the most recent update, it's now possible to sync auth tokens to new devices. Before this, I used Authy instead, because I wanted to be able to easily maintain a backup device or two with my auth tokens in case I were to lose my primary phone. Now, Google Authenticator has this functionality. And, unlike Authy, it works offline and doesn't transmit any data to a server. Auth token are one of the few things I would prefer not to have stored on a server in the cloud. Unfortunately, the most recent update also broke Wear OS compatibility. It's no longer possible to install the app on a Wear OS watch and if you still have the old watch app installed, it cannot sync with the new phone app. This is very disappointing. Authenticator codes on the watch were a huge benefit.
They should fix this app, we should be able to log into our accounts without QR codes and stuff like that, if could log in with our emails and password, it would solve so much problems people have with this app when it comes to not being able to log in. PLEASE take this into consideration, a lot of people would appreciate if you fixed this.
Google's is the only Authenticator I've used, so I can't really compare and review. But in the past three or four years of usage, it's been a hassle-free and smooth experience. The app also doubles as Google's hardware based 2FA acceptor (unsure if that's how it even works), and I thought that was interesting enough to key in here.
I have yet to have to reset my phone. After reading the reviews for note 8 and the issues with this app, I am concerned about recovering my data if I reset my phone or try to transfer data. I have not had any issues, yet. I will check back with other's reviews so I can decide whether to continue using this app.
Like many of the other 1 star reviews for this app - I am unable to restore my tokens after doing a factory reset on my phone. Not all auth apps are like this. Authy saved my tokens and any sites for that app are fine. Anything that was linked to my Google Authenticator, I am trying to regain access to. I know Google isn't the greatest when it comes to technology but you would think someone would have thought of this.
